The Role of Natural Daylight and Health

T

One often overlooked factor in the workplace is natural lighting. I don’t get much natural lighting in my office/the boiler room unless the door is open. There are no windows. I find myself opening said door and standing in the sun. That may stop now that it’s getting cooler. I have found that access to daylight has significant psychological benefits; it can improve mood and energy levels, reduce fatigue, and help us feel connected to the outside world. That could be why I keep to myself (kidding). When we are confined to windowless spaces we find ourselves feeling cut off, which can lead to psychological strain over time.

Taking care of our team and ensuring they and we can invest in their health will have direct and indirect benefits for all. Healthier employees are more productive, have fewer healthcare needs, and contribute positively to the work environment. Ensuring a healthy workspace—mentally, physically, and emotionally—lays the foundation for long-term success. Who doesn’t want success?
